Oct 06 – A mysterious ailment has struck approximately 95 schoolgirls in Kenya, leaving them paralyzed, as reported by the media.
Officials from Kakamega County have confirmed that 95 students from St. Theresa’s Eregi Girls High School, situated 374 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, have been admitted to the hospital due to reported leg paralysis, according to KBC.co.ke.
Bernard Wesonga, Kakamega County’s CEC for Health, revealed that samples of blood, urine, and stool have been collected and sent for comprehensive testing to determine the cause of this enigmatic illness, which has triggered panic and anxiety among parents.
Wesonga was quoted as saying, “Some students are responding positively to medication, while others are still under medical care.”
The affected students have exhibited symptoms such as knee pain, leading to difficulty in walking. Local media reports suggest that these girls are grappling with a condition that causes numbness and immobility in their legs. Additionally, some have reportedly experienced severe headaches, vomiting, and fever.
In response to this health crisis, the school has been indefinitely closed following a meeting between school administrators and officials from the Education Ministry.
The government has issued an appeal to parents and guardians of the affected students to remain vigilant and closely monitor the health of their children while health officials diligently work to identify the causes and establish containment measures.
