Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday met Governor Raghubar Das at the Raj Bhavan in Bhubaneswar and submitted his resignation from the post of Chief Minister of Odisha after the party’s defeat in the assembly elections in Odisha. Odisha Chief Minister and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik’s 24-year-old tenure has come to an end after suffering a crushing defeat in the assembly and parliamentary elections. The Biju Janata Dal has been ruling Odisha since 1997, which faced defeat at the hands of the BJP.
CM Patnaik’s political career spans more than two decades and it will be the first time in his political career that he will sit on the opposition bench in the assembly. Senior party leaders held a meeting at Patnaik’s residence to discuss future strategy.
On March 5, 2000, Naveen Patnaik was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Odisha. The main reason his party came to power then was the popularity of Patnaik’s father and former CM Biju Patnaik.
Naveen Patnaik was in power for 24 years. His dream of becoming chief minister for the sixth time was dashed by the opposition wave. The Bharatiya Janata Party has wrested power from the BJD by winning 78 seats in the 147-member assembly.
In the 147-seat assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party won 78 seats, while the BJD won 51 seats, falling well short of the majority figure of 74. 14 seats were won by the Indian National Congress. BJD won 112 seats in the 2019 assembly elections.
Out of the 21 parliamentary seats in the state in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 20 seats, while the Congress won the remaining one seat. Naveen Patnaik entered state politics through BJD party. He started his political journey by winning the 1998 Lok Sabha by-election.
Counting of Lok Sabha Elections 2024 took place on Tuesday. According to the Election Commission of India, 240 seats were won by the BJP. If we talk about the previous Lok Sabha elections then BJP won 303 seats in Lok Sabha Election 2019. This time, compared to the last election, it was far behind. On the other hand, the Congress won 99 seats, an increase from last time.
