Congress leader and MP-elect Rahul Gandhi has criticized Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi over alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), pledging to raise the issue in Parliament.
Addressing the NEET controversy, Rahul Gandhi took to X, asserting his commitment to the Congress party’s promise to protect students from paper leaks, and highlighting a “robust plan” to combat this issue.
Rahul Gandhi wrote, “Narendra Modi has not even taken oath yet, and the NEET exam scam has already affected more than 24 lakh students and their families. Six students from the same exam center scored top marks, and many received scores that are technically impossible, yet the government denies the possibility of a paper leak.”
“The Congress party has devised a comprehensive strategy to dismantle the ‘paper leak industry,’ which operates in collusion with the education mafia and government machinery. Our manifesto pledged to eradicate paper leaks by enacting a law,” he added.
Promising to raise this issue in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi said, “I assure all the students of the country that I will be your voice in Parliament and vigorously address issues related to your future. The youth have placed their trust in INDIA – INDIA will not allow their voices to be silenced.”
The National Testing Agency (NTA) recently declared 67 students as toppers of the NEET-UG 2024 exam, a notable increase from previous years, which led to widespread protests by students and their families demanding re-examination and re-evaluation of papers.
Students alleged that grace marks were disproportionately awarded to candidates from certain exam centers. The NTA explained that grace marks were given due to time loss at centers and incorrect questions.
In response to the allegations, the Ministry of Education has established a committee to review the grace marks awarded to over 1,500 candidates. Notably, the NEET exam had only two toppers in 2023 and one in 2022.
