The Amarnath pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir was temporarily postponed on Saturday due to heavy rains. Yatras from both base camps in North and South Kashmir have been suspended for the time being.
It has been raining intermittently since last Friday late night on the Baltal and Pahalgam route. Even after this the Amarnath Yatra was continued. In such a situation, considering the safety of the pilgrims, it has been decided to temporarily postpone this trip as a precaution.
Devotees are very enthusiastic about Baba Barfani’s darshan. Now the journey of this holy Amarnath Yatra has been temporarily postponed due to rain.
Officials informed that pilgrimages from Baltal in North Kashmir and Nunwan (Pahalgam) Base Camp in South Kashmir to Amarnath Cave Temple in South Kashmir Himalayas have been stopped due to heavy rains.
Travelers have to cover the 14 km long trek from Baltal Base Camp to Gufa Mandir on foot or on ponies. After ‘Darshan’, pilgrims who visit Baltal Marg return back to base camp on the same day.
Travelers who travel from the traditional Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp to the cave temple have to cover a distance of up to 48 kilometers, which takes up to four days one way.
The temple is located at an altitude of 3,888 meters above sea level and has a Shivlinga made of ice.
On the Pahalgam-Gufa Mandir route Pahalgam to Chandanwari is 24 kilometers, Chandanwari to Sheshnag is 13 kilometers, Sheshnag to Panchtarani is 5 kilometers and Panchtarni to Cave Temple is 6 kilometers.
