The Sabarmati Express met with an accident on the morning of August 17 near Kanpur railway station in Uttar Pradesh. 22 coaches of the train derailed late Saturday at 2:30 am.
The engine of Sabarmati Express (19168) traveling from Varanasi to Ahmedabad collided with something placed on the track near Govindpuri railway station at around 2:30 pm late night and 22 coaches of the train derailed. However, no casualty has been reported in the incident so far. According to the preliminary investigation, no fracture has been found in the railway track.
When some coaches of the train came down from the tracks, it caused a commotion among the passengers. Senior officials of railway, police and fire departments reached the spot on getting information about the incident and started relief and rescue operations.
The engine of Sabarmati Express (Varanasi to Amdavad) hit an object placed on the track and derailed near Kanpur at 02:35 am today.

District Magistrate Rakesh Kumar said that the crashed Sabarmati Express (19168) was going from Kanpur to Jhansi and during this time 22 coaches of Sabarmati Express derailed. No one was seriously injured in the accident, but some passengers suffered minor injuries. Buses were called on the spot and the passengers were dispatched to their destination.
A Railway Board official said that according to the loco pilot, a stone fell on the engine’s cattle guard (front part) and it was badly damaged and turned, which led to the accident.
Police fire officer Deepak Sharma said that, when we got the information about the derailment of the train, immediately five fire engines were sent to the spot. The Sabarmati Express train was going from Varanasi to Sabarmati. Some coaches of this train derailed in Kanpur. At present nothing has happened to any passenger, all passengers are safe.
According to North Central Railway, Sabarmati Express (19168) running between Varanasi and Ahmedabad derailed after hitting a rock.
A police official said that the railway passengers are being taken by bus to another station and will be sent further by a special train from there.
According to the Railways, seven trains have been canceled and three have been rerouted due to the Sabarmati Express derailment. North Central Railway Zone Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Shashikant Tripathi said buses have been arranged to take the passengers from the accident site to Kanpur railway station.
