Ottawa, December 17 (UITV) – Canada’s Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, recently took a big political step and announced her resignation from the cabinet. This decision was taken after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered to change her ministry. Freeland, who is set to make a statement on Monday on the economic downturn of 2024, shared a letter on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), in which she clarified the reason for her resignation. In this letter, she told that Prime Minister Trudeau had offered her another cabinet position instead of Finance Minister, after which she decided to resign.
Addressing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in her letter, Freeland wrote, “It has always been an honor for me to serve in the government and work for Canada and its citizens. We both have achieved a lot together. You told me on Friday that you do not want me to be your Finance Minister anymore and offered me another position in the cabinet in return.” In this letter, she also said that after giving deep thought to this proposal, it was clear that resigning from the cabinet was the only honest step for her. Freeland wrote, “It is necessary for a minister to have the full confidence of the Prime Minister in him so that he can put his point across effectively. You have ended your trust in me and with this I have lost the authority that I should have had in my role. For the last few weeks, we have been disagreeing on many important decisions for Canada.”
Freeland explained the reasons for her resignation and said that Canada is facing a serious economic crisis. She particularly expressed concern about America’s policy of “aggressive economic nationalism”. Freeland told that there is a threat of imposing a 25 percent tariff on Canada under the upcoming US administration. Taking this threat seriously, she said, “We need to take serious steps to face this threat. This means that we have to keep our fiscal deficit under control so that if there is a tariff war, we have the necessary funds.”
She also said that at this time Canada should avoid any kind of expensive and political moves, which can further aggravate the economic crisis and which can create doubts among Canadian citizens. Freeland believed that understanding the seriousness of the time, we should take decisions only keeping in mind the future direction of the country.
Freeland also mentioned in the letter that her view and Prime Minister Trudeau’s view of the current situation of Canada are different. She believed that keeping in mind the time, the government should have taken tough economic decisions, but in the Prime Minister’s view the political point of view was more important, which she felt was not right for the economic security of the country. Due to this disagreement, she decided to resign.
Freeland’s assessment of Canada’s economic situation and the possible steps of the US administration was not only based on her experience as a finance minister, but it also reflects her deep political understanding. She also said that for her, the welfare of Canada comes first and if the Prime Minister did not have faith in her, she could not work for the country properly.
This development is a turning point in Canadian politics. Freeland’s resignation makes it clear how political disagreements and lack of personal trust can lead to a major decision. However, it also shows that Freeland considered her integrity and her responsibility to the country paramount. She took this step to maintain her effectiveness in the role of a minister, where a leader’s complete trust in the Prime Minister is necessary.
After this resignation, it will be interesting to see in which direction the Canadian government will move forward and how the leader who takes over the Finance Ministry after Freeland will solve the economic challenges of the country.
