The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is poised for a significant organizational reshuffle, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expected to finalize the changes. This initiative follows a proposal by TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who, in November 2024, submitted a report recommending performance-based adjustments within the party. The report highlighted the need for action in approximately 120 municipalities and suggested changes in leadership across ten districts where the party’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was subpar.
A key focus of the impending reshuffle is East Midnapore district, a stronghold of the state’s Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured both Kanthi and Tamluk constituencies in this district, underscoring the necessity for strategic changes. The TMC leadership is scrutinizing the performance of municipal heads and two state cabinet members from East Midnapore, particularly in areas where the party trailed in the elections.
The reshuffle aims to strengthen the party’s unity and effectiveness ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. By prioritizing leaders with strong public images and efficiency, the TMC seeks to address internal challenges and enhance its organizational structure. The changes are anticipated to be implemented after the November bypolls, with a significant party meeting potentially scheduled at Netaji Indoor Stadium in February 2025, where Mamata Banerjee may announce the new organizational framework.
