Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to enhancing urban connectivity and reducing travel times with the approval of the fourth phase of the Delhi Metro project. In a statement, PM Modi emphasized that expanding metro networks is integral to improving urban mobility, reducing pollution, and providing efficient, affordable public transport to millions.
Fourth Phase to Transform Delhi’s Connectivity
The fourth phase of the Delhi Metro, approved at an estimated cost of ₹12,000 crores, aims to add 65.67 kilometers of new metro lines across multiple corridors in the National Capital Region (NCR). This phase includes three major extensions:
- Aerocity-Tughlakabad Corridor
- R.K. Ashram-Janakpuri West Corridor
- Maujpur-Mukundpur Corridor
The new lines will integrate key locations, increase connectivity to under-served areas, and decongest existing networks, benefiting an estimated 1.5 million daily commuters.
Sustainable Urban Transport
Highlighting the need for eco-friendly solutions in urban transportation, PM Modi lauded the Delhi Metro as a model for sustainable development. “Expanding the metro network is not just about infrastructure; it’s about creating a cleaner, greener, and more efficient future for our citizens,” he said.
The metro is expected to significantly reduce vehicular traffic and pollution in the region by encouraging commuters to switch from private vehicles to public transport.
Boost to Urban Development
The fourth phase aligns with the government’s vision of modernizing urban infrastructure under the Smart Cities Mission. The new corridors will connect emerging hubs and residential areas, fostering economic growth and improving access to educational and healthcare facilities.
Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri, emphasized the role of metro expansion in promoting ease of living. “Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 will bridge crucial gaps in connectivity and provide seamless travel for millions. This approval reflects our dedication to building a future-ready India,” he stated.
Future Prospects
With this expansion, the total length of the Delhi Metro network will exceed 450 kilometers, further cementing its position as one of the largest urban rail systems in the world. The project is expected to generate substantial employment during construction and operational phases.
A Step Toward a Connected India
PM Modi’s commitment to improving connectivity through projects like the Delhi Metro is a testament to the government’s vision of a well-connected and inclusive urban landscape. The fourth phase of the Delhi Metro represents a giant leap forward in making public transport accessible, affordable, and environmentally friendly for all citizens.
The project is slated for completion by 2026, bringing new opportunities and easing travel woes for millions of Delhiites and NCR residents.
