The Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement on Wednesday that Veteran industrialist Ratan Tata, former Supreme Court Justice KT Thomas, and former Deputy Lok Sabha Speaker Kariya Munda have been named as trustees of the PM Care Fund.
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the PM Care Fund, which was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and appointed these names as they too shared a reputation with the fund.
In the meeting, Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus, Tata Sons; Justice KT Thomas, former SC judge, and Kariya Munda, former deputy speaker were appointed as newly nominated trustees of PM CARE Fund.
According to the PMO, the Trust has decided to nominate other eminent persons to form the Advisory Board on the PM Care Fund. These dignitaries include Rajiv Mehrishi, former Comptroller and Auditor General of India; Sudha Murthy, former chairperson, Infosys Foundation, and Anand Shah, co-founder of Teach for India and former CEO of Indicorps and Piramal Foundation.
The Prime Minister said that the participation of new trustees and advisers would provide a broader perspective on the functioning of the PM CARE Fund. PMO also added that “Their vast experience in public life will further strengthen the fund to make it more responsive to diverse public needs,”
During the Covid-19 pandemic, to help the poor people The PM Care Fund was created. The fund’s primary objective is to deal with any kind of emergency or disaster caused by the epidemic and to provide relief to the affected people. The fund consists entirely of voluntary contributions from individuals/organizations and receives no budgetary support.
Donations to PM CARES Fund will qualify for the 80G facility for 100% exemption under Income Tax Act. According to data from the Centre, a total of ₹7,031.99 crores was collected under the PM CARES Fund during 2020-21.
The Prime Minister is the ex-officio chairman of the PM CARES Fund and the Defense Minister, Home Minister and Finance Minister of the Government of India are the ex-officio trustees of the fund.
