Aug 25 – Women from the Indian diaspora in Johannesburg, South Africa, celebrated Raksha Bandhan with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (August 22), tying ‘Rakhi’ on his hands as they welcomed him to South Africa. Arthi Nanakchand Shanand, President of Arya Samaj South Africa, and a member of the Indian community, along with Dr Sarres Padayachee, an author and Cultural Custodian, tied ‘Rakhi’ to the Prime Minister.
Shanand remarked , ahead of PM Modi’s arrival in South Africa, that the PM sees the globe as ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – one earth, one family, and that “PM Modi is more like a father figure to us than a brother figure.” I believe his presence here gives us a sense of belonging…PM Modi sees the planet as a ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – a one earth with one family. “With his Vedic knowledge, he will make a significant difference in South Africa,” she predicted.
