As “Mardaani” marked its tenth anniversary in Hindi cinema on Thursday, the creators of the Rani Mukerji-led film hinted at the next chapter of the popular franchise. Yash Raj Films, the production house behind the series, released a teaser on YouTube to commemorate the milestone.
The teaser takes fans on a journey, starting with moments from the original “Mardaani,” which first hit theaters in 2014. It then transitions to highlights from “Mardaani 2,” released in 2019, showcasing memorable scenes and iconic dialogues from both films.
The production company captioned the teaser: “10 years of #Mardaani and the next chapter awaits… Celebrating the feisty, daredevil cop #ShivaniShivajiRoy and the spirit of #Mardaani today. Thank you for a decade of love and appreciation for our beloved franchise. We are inspired… again… thanks to you. #RaniMukerji #10YearsOfMardaani.”
The first “Mardaani” film, directed by Pradeep Sarkar, follows the story of Shivani Shivaji Roy, a tough police officer whose investigation into the kidnapping of a teenage girl leads her to expose a human trafficking ring run by the Indian mafia. The film also featured Jisshu Sengupta, Tahir Raj Bhasin, and Saanand Verma in supporting roles.
In “Mardaani 2,” Rani Mukerji returned as Shivani, this time hunting down a 21-year-old rapist and murderer, portrayed by newcomer Vishal Jethwa. The sequel was directed by Gopi Puthran.
Rani Mukerji’s most recent film was “Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway,” directed by Ashima Chibber. The legal drama, which also stars Anirban Bhattacharya, Neena Gupta, and Jim Sarbh, is inspired by the true story of an Indian couple, Anurup Bhattacharya and Sagarika Chakraborty, whose children were taken away by Norwegian authorities in 2011. Rani played the role of Sagarika, a mother who fought tirelessly against the system to bring her children back to India.
