Famous Urdu poet Munawwar Rana died on Sunday night at SGPGI Hospital in Lucknow due to a heart attack at the age of 71.
For several months, famous Urdu poet Munawwar Rana was battling cancer, kidney and heart related diseases and was undergoing treatment at SGPGI Hospital.
Munawwar Rana’s daughter Sumaiya Rana said that her father will be laid to rest on Monday.
Munawwar Rana’s son Tabrez Rana said, “He was hospitalized for 14 to 15 days due to his illness. Earlier he was taken to Medanta Hospital in Lucknow. After that he was admitted to SGPGI Hospital in Lucknow, where he breathed his last at around 11 pm on Sunday night.”
Poet Munawwar Rana is survived by his wife, a son and four daughters.

Famous Urdu poet Munawwar Rana was born on November 26, 1952 in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh. He is known for his contributions to Urdu literature and poetry. He is widely recognized for his ghazals. In his poetic style, a collection of Hindi and Awadhi words are seen more than Persian and Arabic, which were very much liked by the Indian listeners.
His most famous ghazal was ‘Maa’, in which he praised the qualities of his mother in the traditional ghazal style.
Famous Urdu poet Munawwar Rana has received many awards throughout his career like – Amir Khusro Award, Ghalib Award, Mir Taqi Mir Award, Saraswati Samaj Award, Dr. Received Zakir Hussain Award etc. His works have also been translated into many languages.
He was honored with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014, this award was given to him for his poetry book ‘Shahdaba’. However, he later returned the award due to growing intolerance in the country.
He spent most of his life in Kolkata. Not only did he present his Mushairas in India, he also had an important presence in foreign countries.
Expressing grief over the demise of famous poet Munawwar Rana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that poet Munawwar Rana made an important and rich contribution to Urdu literature and poetry. Expressing his condolences on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister wrote, “Saddened by the demise of Shri Munawwar Rana ji. My condolences to his family and fans. may his soul rest in peace.”
