Kabul, October 9: The death toll from the 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Afghanistan on October 7 has increased to 2,445, and more than 9,200 people are reported injured. The earthquake occurred in Herat and neighboring provinces of Afghanistan. Rescue team officials are busy evacuating the people buried under the debris.
It is being said that the maximum impact of the earthquake has been in the Janda Jan district of Herat. About 13 villages there have been destroyed.
National Disaster Management Authority spokesperson Mulla Janan Sheikh said that more than 9,200 people were injured during the earthquake.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck at around 11 a.m. on October 7, northwest of Herat City in Afghanistan. Due to the earthquake, communication systems and roads have been blocked. Due to this rescue workers are struggling to reach remote areas.
The World Health Organization (WHO) believes that about 465 houses have been destroyed in this earthquake.
Herat city of Afghanistan is located 120 km east of the Iranian border and it is said that the population here is 1.9 million.
Earthquakes occur frequently in Afghanistan. An earthquake of 5.9 magnitude occurred in Paktika province of Afghanistan in June last year. More than 1,000 people died and thousands were rendered homeless by this earthquake.
