Singapore, Oct 12: A 24-year-old Tamil man who was drunk and attacked a railway officer in Singapore has been fined SG$800 and sentenced to four weeks in jail, Channel News Asia reports.
The incident occurred on January 16 at Punggol MRT station when Meenachisuntharam Pandiselvam, who had consumed two 180 ml bottles of vodka, refused to leave the train. He scuffled with the 55-year-old assistant station manager. During the quarrel, Pandiselvam repeatedly slammed the victim’s head on the train door, resulting in injuries to the railway officer.
On that fateful day, around 12:15 am, the victim encountered Pandiselvam inside a train compartment, which was ready to return to the depot. When Pandiselvam refused to alight, the assistant station manager had to remove him and his luggage from the train. Pandiselvam faced aggression upon repeated requests to leave, as he started throwing his property. The victim informed Pandiselvam that if he did not comply, the police would be called.
In response, Pandiselvam chased the assistant station manager, who took refuge in the train cabin to escape him. A scuffle broke out between the two men and during the fight, Pandiselvam pushed the victim against the train door, causing the railway official’s head to hit the door several times.
Even after being stopped, Pandiselvam continued to display aggressively disruptive behavior, including removing his clothes and refusing to vacate his seat in the train cabin.
Pandiselvam was charged with voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a penalty of up to three years in prison, a fine of up to SG$5,000, or a combination of both.
