Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment by a Rawalpindi court in the Toshakhana case. General elections are going to be held in Pakistan on 8 February and 8 days before this, former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced.
The court has also barred both Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi from holding any public office for 10 years and imposed a fine of approximately Rs 1,574 million on them.
A day earlier, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and chief Imran Khan and former Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood were sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Cypher case. A day later, a special court set up under the Official Secrets Act sentenced him and his wife to 14 years’ imprisonment in the Toshakhana case.
The hearing was presided over by Judge Mohammad Bashir of the court in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, where Imran Khan is imprisoned, The Express Tribune reported.
The judge also asked the duo to record their statements under Section 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and barred them from cross-examining prosecution witnesses. Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were convicted in this case on January 9.
PTI responded by calling the decision a flouting of the law and claimed that neither Imran nor Bushra were given any right to defend themselves, leaving them facing “another kangaroo trial”.
Imran Khan married Bushra Bibi in 2018, a few months before he was elected Prime Minister of Pakistan. Bushra Bibi was kept in police remand during the entire hearing of this case.
