Colombo, October 10: More than 71,000 people are expected to be affected by heavy rains in Sri Lanka. Giving information, Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Center (DMC) said that heavy rains have caused floods in Sri Lanka and it has affected 71,000 Sri Lankans in 13 districts.
According to a media report, Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Center (DMC) said that heavy rains have caused floods and landslides, in which three people have also died, as well as after a landslide in the western district of Kigali. 127 people have also been reported missing.
Sri Lanka has received heavy rainfall in recent weeks and this rainfall has been caused by the activation of the south-west monsoon. Given the current rainy weather conditions, the National Building Research Organization has warned of landslides in many districts of Sri Lanka and asked to remain alert.
According to government sources, it is being said that the rain has broken the record for the last 25 years. This rain is happening due to the formation of a low-pressure center in the Bay of Bengal. In this sad time in Sri Lanka, many countries including India have offered all possible help. To help Sri Lanka, the Indian ship INS Sunayna reached Colombo port with essential supplies.
The Meteorological Department says that there is a possibility of rain for the next 48 hours and after that, the rain will reduce in Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces.
Sri Lankan President Sirisena is appealing for assistance to people affected by heavy rains. He said that people should come forward to help the affected people by providing them shelter, cash, clothes dry rations, etc.
According to government sources, about 4.45 lakh people from 22 districts of the country have been displaced in this tragedy. More than three lakh people have taken shelter in the relief camps set up by the government. In this sad time, help is also being offered from abroad. America, Australia, Nepal, and Japan have announced financial assistance for the flood-affected people.
