New Delhi, November 16 (UITV)- The death of 10 newborn babies due to a massive fire in the NICU ward of ‘Maharani Laxmibai Medical College’ in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh on Friday has saddened the whole country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled this heartbreaking incident and announced financial assistance for the affected families. Deep sorrow was expressed over the incident by tweeting from the official ‘X’ handle of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The PMO wrote, “This incident of fire in the medical college of Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh is extremely sad and disturbing. My deepest condolences to the families who have lost their innocent children. I pray to God to give them the strength to bear this immense sorrow.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased children and Rs 50,000 to the injured as relief from the ‘Prime Minister National Relief Fund’.
According to Chief Medical Superintendent Sachin Mahor, a total of 54 newborns were admitted in the NICU ward. Suddenly the oxygen concentrator caught fire and the fire spread rapidly in the ward. Due to excess oxygen, it became challenging to control the fire. Although 47 children were rescued safely in the relief and rescue operation, the lives of 10 newborns could not be saved. The injured are undergoing treatment.
President Draupadi Murmu expressed deep condolences on the heart-wrenching accident at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. Expressing her condolences on the social media platform ‘X’, she wrote, “The news of the death of many newborns in the accident at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi is extremely heart-wrenching. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured children.” Expressing her condolences to the bereaved parents and family members, the President said, “I pray to God to give them the strength to bear this cruel blow.” Also, he wished for the speedy recovery of the injured infants.
This sensitive message of the President has expressed a sense of solidarity and sympathy in the atmosphere of mourning across the country.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and ordered an inquiry and assured all possible help to the affected families. At the same time, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his condolences to the affected families.
Relief and rescue operations were started immediately after the incident under the supervision of the local administration and the state government. The Chief Minister has ordered strict action against the culprits in this case. The medical college administration has also been asked to conduct a detailed assessment of the safety standards in the ward.
