A teacher at a government school has been suspended for playing Candy Crush on his phone and making personal calls during work hours. The incident was uncovered when District Magistrate Rajendra Pansiya conducted a surprise inspection at the school, discovering numerous errors in students’ workbooks from start to finish.
The situation worsened when a feature on the teacher’s phone, which tracks time spent on applications, showed he had played Candy Crush for nearly two hours during school hours.
“Teachers should focus on checking the classwork and homework of students, and ensure that they get quality education. Also, using mobile phones is not a problem, but using them for personal reasons during school hours is not right,” Pansiya told reporters.
Upon examining six pages from six different students’ workbooks, Pansiya identified 95 mistakes, with nine errors on the first page alone. This prompted him to check the phone of assistant teacher Priyam Goyal. The phone’s Digital Wellbeing feature revealed that out of the five-and-a-half-hour school day, Goyal had spent nearly two hours playing Candy Crush, 26 minutes on phone calls, and almost 30 minutes on social media apps.
The District Magistrate reported the issue to the state education department, which promptly suspended the assistant teacher after taking note of the findings.
