On April 22, 2025, a devastating terrorist attack occurred in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of at least 26 civilians, predominantly tourists, and injuring over 20 others. The assailants targeted visitors in the Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist destination also known as “mini-Switzerland” .
In response, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the attack site on April 23. He paid tributes to the victims at a wreath-laying ceremony in Srinagar and met with the grieving families and survivors, assuring them of the government’s commitment to justice. Shah emphasized that India will not succumb to terrorism and vowed that the perpetrators would face the harshest consequences .
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the investigation and released sketches of four suspects involved in the attack. Preliminary reports suggest the involvement of two Pashto-speaking and two local terrorists .
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, cut short his trip to Saudi Arabia, and returned to India to address the situation. International leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have expressed condolences and support for India in combating terrorism .
The attack has prompted heightened security measures and a comprehensive investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
