Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Sunday that he would resign from his position within the next two days. Speaking at a public gathering, Kejriwal revealed that he is pushing for early elections in November and that a new Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader will take over as Chief Minister until the elections are completed. He added that the decision on the interim CM will be made soon.
“I am ready for Agni Pariksha,” Kejriwal stated, explaining, “Two days from now, I will step down as Chief Minister. I will not hold this position until the people deliver their verdict. Elections in Delhi are still months away.”
Kejriwal also shared plans for an upcoming meeting to finalize the new Chief Minister. “In 2-3 days, we will decide on the CM. Manish Sisodia and I are going to ‘Janta ki adalat’ (people’s court), and our fate is in your hands. If you believe I am honest, please vote for me. If not, don’t. If the Centre questions the possibility of governing from prison, I have proven it can be done. I call upon all non-BJP Chief Ministers not to resign if imprisoned by the PM on false charges. We must not surrender. It’s not about power or position, but about our Constitution, our country, and protecting democracy.”
Kejriwal’s remarks come two days after he was released on bail following six months in jail. Upon his release, he launched a fierce critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, calling it “more dictatorial than the British.”
Former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia echoed Kejriwal’s sentiments, criticizing the BJP’s handling of the so-called “liquor scam.” He stated, “The BJP created a fictional narrative around the ‘liquor scam.’ The Supreme Court granted bail to Arvind Kejriwal, ending that story. It’s a happy ending for us and a sad one for the BJP. They thought they could keep Kejriwal in jail until the Delhi elections, but the court disproved their allegations. Today, both Arvind Kejriwal and I are free.”
