The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded an apology from Congress leader Sonia Gandhi following her remarks on the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. Mrs. Gandhi described the bill as a “brazen assault” on the Constitution and accused the BJP of attempting to keep society in a state of “permanent polarisation.”
Speaking at a Congress Parliamentary Party meeting, Mrs. Gandhi claimed that the bill was “bulldozed” through the Lok Sabha without adequate discussion. She asserted that the Modi government is leading the country into an abyss where the Constitution might remain only on paper.
In response, BJP MPs, led by Nishikant Dubey, demanded an apology from Mrs. Gandhi, arguing that her statements were an attack on the Indian Constitution. The protests led to the adjournment of Lok Sabha proceedings, with treasury bench members chanting “Sonia Gandhi maafi maango” (Sonia Gandhi, apologize).
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla termed Mrs. Gandhi’s remarks “most unfortunate,” emphasizing that casting aspersions on House proceedings is inappropriate.
The Congress party has announced plans to challenge the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Supreme Court.
