At least five people were killed and several others critically injured in the accident after a bus slipped and fell from an overbridge on National Highway-16 near Barabati in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Monday evening. There are also injured. This information has been given by the authorities.
According to official sources, this bus carrying about 55 passengers including children and women was going from Cuttack to Haldia in East Medinipur district of West Bengal. The bus driver reportedly lost control and the accident took place. Around 8 pm, the vehicle slipped and fell from the overbridge near Barabati Chowk in Jajpur in Rasulpur area.
Fire service personnel from Rasulpur and Chandikhol fire stations immediately reached the accident spot on receiving the information and rescued all the victims with the help of local people.
All the injured were taken out of the bus by the firemen with the help of gas cutters.
16 ambulances and cranes were used in this rescue operation.
Jajpur Superintendent of Police, a team of doctors and other district administration officials also reached the accident site to supervise the rescue operations.
Around 40 injured passengers were taken to a nearby hospital in Dharamshala, where five were declared dead by doctors. Meanwhile, more than 10 passengers were referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital for better treatment.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has expressed grief over this tragic accident and has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 3-3 lakh to the families of the deceased. He also announced that the state government would bear the entire cost of the treatment of the injured.
