The Director General of Police and Commandant General of Home Guards, Director of Civil Defence, Director General of Fire, and Emergency Service and State Disaster Response Force(SDRF) of Karnataka State, senior IPS officer Dr. Amar Kumar Pandey, is due to retire from his position on December 31 st. After 33 glorious years of service to the nation, he hung up the uniform. He is one of the most admired, brave, knowledgeable, and decorated officers of the Indian Police Service.
On December 26, a state police farewell parade was held at the Karnataka State Reserve Police Parade Grounds in Koramangala to honor the senior officer on his retirement. During the event, Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood, Police Commissioner Pratap Reddy, and other senior officials were present and thanked him for his service.

As an IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre and a member of the 1989 batch, Dr. Amar Kumar Pandey made an outstanding contribution to the country by understanding how to manage its affairs . According to the 2016 IPS regulation, Dr. Amar Kumar Pandey was elevated to serve in the position of Director General of Police in 2020 .
He holds a doctorate in refugee studies from Bangalore’s National Law School of India University (NLSIU).
As a peacekeeper for the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dr. Amar Kumar Pandey has worked as a human rights officer in Banja Luka and as a human rights coordinator in the Doboj region. He has worked for the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone as a Police Monitor in Makeni and a Police Advisor to the National Police in Freetown.
The Government of India has honored Dr. Amar Kumar Pandey with the Police Medal for Gallantry as well as the President of India Medal for Distinguished Service and the President of India Medal for Meritorious Service. The United Nations presented him with Medals of Service for International Peacekeeping Service in Sierra Leone in 2005 and Bosnia Herzegovina in 1998. In the field of enterprise architecture, he won the coveted Zachman Award.
The arrest and extradition of Indian Don Ravi Pujari from Senegal to Bengaluru was made by Dr. Amar Kumar Pandey. He had conducted operation against another Mangàlore Don Bannanje Raja and the ISIS operative Mehdi Masroor Biswas in 2014 . ‘ The police have myriad problems while investigating cases, in terms of collection of pieces of evidence and presenting them before the courts. The laws don’t pose problems, the situation does.’ — He stated after the extradition.
Dr. Amar Kumar Pandey has authored books like The Architecture of Return in Civil War and A Don’s Nemesis (under publication) and Synopsis of Investigation in Criminal Cases .
