Hashim Musa, a former Pakistani Army para commando, has been identified as the prime suspect in the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, predominantly tourists. Investigations reveal that Musa, after being dismissed from the Pakistan Army’s Special Forces, joined the banned terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). He infiltrated into India in September 2023 and has since been active in Jammu and Kashmir, primarily operating in the Budgam district near Srinagar.
Musa’s military background was uncovered during interrogations of overground workers (OGWs) who assisted the attackers. These OGWs provided logistical support and helped in reconnaissance missions. Security officials believe that Musa’s expertise in unconventional warfare, covert operations, and handling sophisticated weapons significantly contributed to the execution of the attack.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have released sketches of the three suspects involved in the attack: Hashim Musa (alias Suleman), Ali Bhai (alias Talha Bhai), both Pakistani nationals, and Adil Hussain Thoker, a resident of Anantnag, J&K. A reward of Rs 20 lakh has been announced for credible information leading to their capture.
Authorities have linked the Pahalgam attack to previous incidents in the region, including attacks in Gagangir and Buta Pathri in 2024, suggesting a pattern of targeting non-local civilians and security personnel. The involvement of a former Pakistani military personnel in such attacks underscores concerns about the nexus between state actors and terrorist organizations.
In response to the attack, India has heightened security measures across Jammu and Kashmir, closed several tourist destinations, and initiated extensive search operations to apprehend the perpetrators. The incident has also intensified diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, with India accusing Pakistan-based militants of orchestrating the assault.
