Kannada actress Ranya Rao was apprehended on March 3, 2025, at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport for attempting to smuggle 14.2 kilograms of gold, valued at approximately ₹12.56 crore, from Dubai.
Modus Operandi:
During interrogation by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Rao disclosed that she had received internet calls instructing her to collect the gold at Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 3, Gate A. She met an unidentified man, described as six feet tall with a wheatish complexion and an American accent, in the airport’s dining lounge. This individual handed her two packets wrapped in thick tarpaulin-like plastic. Rao then proceeded to a restroom, where she concealed 12 gold bars by taping them to her body using adhesive tape she had prepared beforehand. Additional gold pieces were hidden in her shoes and pockets.
Investigation and Raids:
Following her arrest, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated multiple raids in Bengaluru and other locations in Karnataka, suspecting a broader smuggling syndicate operating from Dubai. The ED’s involvement aims to uncover potential money laundering activities linked to this case.
Controversies and Official Actions:
Reports suggest that Rao may have exploited VIP courtesy services at Bengaluru airport to bypass security checks, possibly leveraging her connections to facilitate the smuggling operation. Initially, the Karnataka Home Department ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe potential lapses by police officers at the airport. However, this order was later withdrawn, with officials stating that central agencies like the DRI and ED are adequately handling the investigation.
The case has raised significant concerns about security protocols at airports and the involvement of organized smuggling networks, prompting a comprehensive investigation by multiple agencies.
