Chennai, December 30 (UITV) – The National Commission for Women (NCW) team will start investigating the sexual harassment case in Chennai-based Anna University today. The NCW team reached Chennai on Sunday to investigate the matter. This step has been taken when some girl students of Anna University have accused a professor of the university of sexual harassment. This case has created a new controversy in the education sector and with this serious questions have been raised about women’s safety and equality across the country.
This case came to light on December 25, when a 19-year-old girl and her male friend were sitting at a secluded place in the Anna University campus. Both had reached this place in the university after attending the Christmas function, but then an accused followed them. He first attacked the boy and beat him badly, then dragged the girl to the nearby bushes and raped her.
Recently some girl students alleged that a professor made them victims of mental and physical harassment. After the allegations, the university administration had ordered an inquiry, but the girl students felt that their allegations were not being heard properly and no seriousness was being shown in the investigation process. After this, they raised the matter before the National Commission for Women.
After this incident, the National Commission for Women immediately took cognizance of the matter and formed a fact-finding committee. This committee includes NCW Chairperson Mamta Kumari, retired IPS officer Praveen Dixit and former DGP of Maharashtra. This team will reach Anna University today to start the investigation. The primary responsibility of the team is to ensure that this incident is investigated impartially and transparently and the accused is punished.
The commission’s team will start the investigation from today and will analyze all the facts in depth. The team will investigate the matter thoroughly after taking statements from the university administration, students and other concerned parties. The commission has ensured that no laxity will be taken in this investigation and efforts will be made to reach an impartial conclusion keeping in mind every aspect.
In this case, NCW has also sought a reply from the university administration. The commission has asked the university what steps it has taken so far on the allegations and if any action has been taken, what has been its nature. Also, the commission has directed the university to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Given the seriousness of this matter, NCW has pledged to complete the investigation as soon as possible by giving it priority. The commission says that if the allegations are found to be true, strict action will be taken against the concerned professor and no culprit will be allowed to escape. Also, if the university administration has ignored the allegations or has not taken appropriate action, strict action will be taken against it as well.
This matter is giving rise to an important discussion about the safety and rights of women in educational institutions. After the allegations of the girl students and the investigation of NCW, it is expected that this case will set an example in matters of women’s safety and in the times to come, action will be taken more seriously in cases of sexual harassment against female students in universities and colleges.
This investigation will not be limited to Anna University, but it will also send a message to other institutions that keeping silent or ignoring allegations of sexual harassment is not acceptable under any circumstances. All institutions need to make their measures and policies strict and effective to protect women’s rights.
