On the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon citizens to remain vigilant against the threat of ‘urban naxalism,’ a term used to describe extremist ideologies that seek to disrupt national unity from within urban areas. Speaking at a gathering to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, PM Modi stressed the importance of national unity and collective responsibility in safeguarding India’s progress.
In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the legacy of Sardar Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs, who is remembered for his pivotal role in unifying over 500 princely states into modern India. “Sardar Patel’s vision was one of a strong, united India, an ideal that we must continuously strive to protect,” Modi said. He urged citizens to stay alert to emerging threats that attempt to destabilize the country from within, particularly those propagating extremist ideologies in urban areas.
“Urban naxalism” has become a point of focus for the government, with concerns that some ideological groups are attempting to influence young minds through educational institutions, media, and social platforms. PM Modi cautioned that these groups, often disguised under the banner of intellectualism or social justice, may harbor intentions that do not align with India’s values and progress.
“Urban naxalism is a real threat to India’s unity. They attempt to weaken the nation by disrupting peace and sowing discord,” PM Modi remarked. He further stated that these groups often work with networks that oppose the state’s efforts for national development, posing challenges not only to social harmony but also to economic growth and security.
The Prime Minister encouraged the public to report suspicious activities and to exercise discernment when engaging with ideologies that appear divisive. He emphasized that India’s youth should be encouraged to adopt values that build the nation, fostering progress, inclusivity, and resilience.
Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day, is celebrated every year on October 31, honoring Sardar Patel’s dedication to the cause of a united India. In addition to PM Modi’s address, the day saw a host of nationwide events, including the ‘Run for Unity’ in major cities, where thousands of people participated to symbolize the spirit of oneness. The events also included cultural programs and exhibitions showcasing Sardar Patel’s achievements and India’s journey towards unity and development.
PM Modi’s emphasis on vigilance against divisive forces echoed his broader call for a robust and cohesive nation. The Prime Minister concluded his speech by reiterating that “unity is our strength, and no force, internal or external, can break it as long as we stand together.”
