Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow on Tuesday over the passing of renowned music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan, acknowledging the significant void left by his departure.
In a message shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Modi conveyed his grief, stating, “Pained by the demise of Ustad Rashid Khan Ji, a legendary figure in the world of Indian classical music.”
The prime minister went on to praise Khan’s exceptional talent and unwavering dedication to music, emphasizing the enriching impact he had on the cultural landscape and the inspiration he provided to generations. Modi added, “His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. My heartfelt condolences to his family, disciples, and countless admirers.”
Ustad Rashid Khan, who had been battling cancer, passed away at a private hospital in Kolkata at the age of 55. His final rites will be conducted with state honors in the city on Wednesday.
The celebrated musician’s health had deteriorated following a cerebral attack last month. Initially treated at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, he later chose to continue his treatment exclusively in Kolkata.
Born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, Rashid Khan received his initial training from his maternal grand-uncle Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. Recognizing his musical prowess, his uncle Ghulam Mustafa Khan provided early training in Mumbai. However, the primary training was under the guidance of Nissar Hussain Khan in Badayun.
Rashid Khan’s debut concert took place at the age of eleven, and by 1978, he had graced the stage at an ITC concert in Delhi. Joining the ITC Sangeet Research Academy (SRA) in Calcutta at the age of 14 in 1980, following his guru Nissar Hussain Khan, marked a significant milestone in his musical journey.
Known for blending classical Hindustani music with lighter genres, Rashid Khan ventured into experimental collaborations, including performances with Western instrumentalist Louis Banks. He showcased his versatility by engaging in jugalbandis, sharing the stage with sitarist Shahid Parvez and other accomplished musicians.
