Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have experienced widespread waterlogging due to heavy rains in the last 24 hours. This has affected roads, trains and highways. Lakhs of commuters are stranded at several stations and the decision has been taken to close all schools for the morning session. This information was given by the authorities on Monday.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), some parts of Mumbai recorded more than 300 mm of rain within six hours from 1 am to 7 am on Monday. Heavy rain is forecast to continue for the next two days.
People are facing the problem of waterlogging in roads, railway tracks, low lying areas. Apart from this, people are also facing problems like closure of metro, flooding of houses, shops or offices and disruption of traffic in many places.
Suburban local trains were delayed due to heavy rain, while some trains were also cancelled. Heavy rush was also witnessed at almost all the railway stations of the Western Railway and Central Railway network.
Apart from this, trains carrying thousands of passengers in Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Gujarat, Mumbai-Kolhapur sectors are either delayed or cancelled. Many trains are stopped at the stations.
More than 50 flights have also been canceled due to heavy rain. Several airlines have also issued warnings to passengers through social media platforms urging them to check flight status properly before leaving home for the airport.
Several subways in Mumbai including Andheri, Santacruz, Malad, Jogeshwari, Kandivali, Dahisar etc. have been flooded up to 3-5 feet and east-west traffic has also been disrupted due to this heavy rain.
Dombivli, Thane, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Kurla, Bhandup, Sion, Kurla, near Wadala railway tracks and many residential complexes have been flooded. Suburban trains were affected due to waterlogging.
Due to the heavy rain, several trees fell, several vehicles got stuck in different areas of the city and many other minor incidents also occurred, but no casualty has been reported so far.
India Meteorological Department has issued orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Konkan belt.
