Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has addressed the recent controversy involving comedian Kunal Kamra and the subsequent vandalism by Shiv Sena workers at Mumbai’s Habitat studio. While Shinde stated that he does not support the acts of vandalism, he invoked Isaac Newton’s third law of motion, remarking, “Every action has a reaction.”
The controversy began after Kamra performed a parody song criticizing Shinde for his political realignment in 2022, labeling him a “gaddar” (traitor). This led to Shiv Sena supporters vandalizing the studio where the performance took place. Shinde emphasized the importance of maintaining a certain level of discourse, suggesting that provocative actions can lead to responses.
In response to the incident, Kamra has declined to apologize, asserting his right to free expression. He has also questioned whether the law will be applied equally to those involved in the vandalism and the subsequent demolition of parts of the studio by civic officials citing building violations.
This incident has ignited a broader debate on freedom of speech and the boundaries of political satire in India.
