Following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, including 25 tourists and one local resident, the United States has urged both India and Pakistan to pursue a “responsible resolution” to de-escalate tensions in the region. The U.S. State Department condemned the attack and expressed support for India, while also calling for dialogue between the two nations to prevent further escalation.
In the aftermath of the attack, India and Pakistan have engaged in a series of retaliatory actions. India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, expelled Pakistani diplomats, and conducted military operations in Kashmir. Pakistan responded by closing its airspace to Indian flights and suspending the Shimla Agreement. Both countries have also exchanged small arms fire along the Line of Control (LoC) for several consecutive nights.
The U.S. has maintained diplomatic communication with both countries, emphasizing the importance of restraint and dialogue to prevent further conflict. While the U.S. has expressed support for India’s right to self-defense, it has also urged both nations to work towards a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
