Following the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, the Opposition raised concerns about the absence of security personnel in the area. During an all-party meeting convened by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah, opposition leaders questioned why troops were not deployed in Baisaran, the site of the attack.
In response, the central government acknowledged lapses in security arrangements. It was revealed that local tour operators had opened the Baisaran route to tourists without obtaining the necessary clearance from intelligence agencies. This unauthorized decision led to the area being accessible without adequate security measures in place.
The government emphasized that Baisaran is typically secured annually in preparation for the Amarnath Yatra. However, at the time of the attack, the area had not been fortified, contributing to the vulnerability of the tourists.
In the aftermath, the government has initiated a comprehensive review of security protocols in Jammu and Kashmir to prevent such incidents in the future.
