Yusuf Pathan, former Indian cricketer and current Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament from Baharampur, West Bengal, is facing criticism for a social media post amid ongoing unrest in Murshidabad district. Pathan shared a photo of himself enjoying tea with the caption “Good Chai,” which many perceived as insensitive given the recent violence in the region. Social media users expressed their displeasure, questioning his silence on the local issues and urging him to address the situation.
This incident follows previous controversies involving Pathan. In March 2024, the West Bengal Congress lodged a complaint with the Election Commission, accusing him of violating the Model Code of Conduct by using images from India’s 2011 Cricket World Cup victory, including photos of national icons like Sachin Tendulkar, in his campaign materials. The Election Commission subsequently directed Pathan to remove these images and refrain from using the national flag in his campaign .
Additionally, in October 2024, Congress leader Soumya Aich Roy urged the West Bengal governor to take action against Pathan and another politician for allegedly polarizing voters along religious lines during the 2024 elections .
The recent “Good Chai” post has intensified scrutiny of Pathan’s actions and public statements, especially during times of local unrest.
