Amendments to the International Regulations introduce the definition of “pandemic emergency”. The main objective of this amendment is to promote more effective international cooperation in responding to events that may become or have become epidemics.
On the definition of “epidemic emergency”, the World Health Organization stated that it is based on the existing International Health Regulations (2005) mechanism and that it leads to a high level of alert.
The amendment also included the establishment of a “coordinated financial mechanism” to strengthen financial assistance to developing countries. At the same time, with its help, the building of key capabilities, epidemic prevention, preparedness and response capabilities of developing countries will also be promoted.
Apart from this, the member countries of WHO have agreed to continue their talks on the draft of the “Pandemic Agreement”.
