Anish Thapa of the Services Sports Control Board and Jyoti Gawate from Maharashtra achieved victory at the Bengaluru Marathon, claiming the top honors in their respective categories. The event, held on a Sunday, commenced with Governor of Karnataka Thawar Chand Gehlot flagging off a crowd of over 25,000 running and fitness enthusiasts, infusing a festive spirit into the highly anticipated race. The Bengaluru Marathon featured three categories: the full marathon (42.195 km), the half marathon (21.1 km), and the 5km Hope Run.
Anish Thapa’s triumph marked a remarkable achievement as he had previously secured victory at the New Delhi Marathon, also organized by NEB Sports earlier in the year. He completed the race in an impressive time of 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 6 seconds, comfortably surpassing his competitors Akshay Saini (SSCB) and Kuldeep Singh (UP).
In the women’s division, Jyoti Gawate emerged as the champion with a time of 3 hours, 8 minutes, and 53 seconds. She faced tough competition from Ashvini Jadhav, also hailing from Maharashtra, who finished just seconds behind her with a time of 3 hours and 9 minutes.
Nagaraj Adiga, the Race Director of the Bengaluru Marathon, expressed his delight at the enthusiastic participation year after year and looked forward to expanding the event in future editions. He acknowledged the vital support of sponsors such as Wipro, partners, Bengaluru Police, and the running community.
Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot commended the early morning participation of Bengaluru’s citizens, emphasizing the significance of such large gatherings. He also applauded the performance of the Indian team at the Asian Games.
Arjuna awardee Reeth Abraham, serving as the event’s brand ambassador, highlighted the growing significance of running as a part of urban lifestyle and community activities. She regarded the Bengaluru Marathon as a source of pride for the city and expressed hope for increased citizen involvement in cheering on the runners in the years to come.
