The Deccan Ultra series was born from the desire of ultra-runners to challenge themselves with distances beyond the 100-mile mark. Since its inception in 2018, this endurance event has grown significantly, bringing together some of the most determined athletes across India. Here’s a quick look back at the event’s journey:
- 1.2018 – 1st Deccan Ultra: The inaugural 200-miler took place along the Bangalore to Chennai Highway.
- 2.2019 – 2nd Deccan Ultra: A 300-miler along the Bangalore to Hubli Highway.
- 3.2020 – 3rd Deccan Ultra: A 500-miler covering the scenic Bangalore – Mangalore – Goa Highway.
After a break due to COVID-19, the Deccan Ultra made a remarkable return in 2024 with its 4th Edition, a 200-miler from Bangalore to Chennai, flagged off by Shri P. Ravikumar, retired Chief Secretary of Government of Karnataka, on November 3rd. This edition saw participation from four ultra-runners: Sushil Bhasin (Bangalore), Dr. Balakrishna Sadasivam (Bhopal), Jagan Reddy (Pune), and Jay Moodley (Bangalore).
The race began at Bhasin Sports, HSR Layout IAS Colony, and quickly picked up momentum with a support run by 100 runners from the Bangalore Sports Foundation. Over four days, the ultra-runners traversed diverse terrains, facing changing weather conditions, from intense sun to rain, and managing pollution and highway noise.
Highlights of the 4th Edition
- Key Achievements: Each runner successfully completed the 200-mile challenge, reaching milestone towns like Krishnagiri, Ambur, Vellore, and Kanchipuram.
- Finish Times:
- •Dr. Bala and Jay Moodley – 90 hours
- •Sushil Bhasin – 94 hours
- •Jagan Reddy – 97 hours
- World Record: Notably, Sushil Bhasin set a new world record in the 70+ age category (in his 75th year) by finishing in 94 hours, becoming the fastest runner in this age group to complete a 200-miler.
