BJP MP Tejasvi Surya launched a sharp attack on Bengaluru’s civic authorities after participating in the TCS World 10K run on Sunday, highlighting the city’s deteriorating public infrastructure in an open letter addressed to Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar and BBMP Commissioner Tushar Girinath.
Surya, who represents Bengaluru South, said he initially felt proud to see senior government leaders at the event’s flag-off. However, that pride quickly gave way to disappointment as he navigated the racecourse, which he described as “pathetic.”

“Not a single stretch was free of potholes. Many runners stumbled, sprained ankles, and some even got injured,” Surya wrote. He added that senior citizens and wheelchair participants faced serious challenges due to the poor condition of the roads. Shockingly, even the Central Business District — expected to be a model for the city — was riddled with potholes, broken footpaths, garbage dumps, and foul-smelling corners.
Calling it a “missed opportunity” to showcase “Brand Bengaluru” to the world, Surya criticized civic agencies for failing to prepare adequately for a prestigious international event. “We were hosting a Gold Label event certified by World Athletics, with athletes from across the globe. What image did we present of our city?” he questioned.
Drawing a direct comparison with Mumbai, Surya praised the civic preparedness at the Mumbai Marathon, where he said the experience was “incredible.” The stark difference between the two cities, he argued, was evident.
In his letter, Surya made a direct appeal to Shivakumar and Girinath, holding them “responsible, answerable, and accountable” for Bengaluru’s crumbling infrastructure. He urged authorities to act urgently, not just for international events, but for the daily lives of the city’s residents.
“Our city deserves better,” Surya concluded, emphasizing that Bengaluru’s brand and its citizens were being let down by poor governance.
The TCS World 10K, which drew nearly 40,000 participants this year, is one of Asia’s premier road running events and a key platform for host cities to showcase themselves on the global stage.
