Indian wrestler-turned-legislator Vinesh Phogat has announced plans to establish an international-level sports academy using the ₹4 crore prize money awarded by the Haryana Government. This initiative aims to provide world-class training facilities for aspiring athletes, ensuring they have the resources needed to excel in their respective sports.
Under Haryana’s sports policy, Olympic medalists are offered a choice between a government job, a land plot, or a cash reward. Despite being disqualified from the women’s 50kg category at the 2024 Paris Olympics due to a minor weight discrepancy, Phogat was still granted the silver medalist reward of ₹4 crore. She opted for the cash prize, stating that it offers her the flexibility to realize her long-held dream of nurturing young talent through a dedicated sports academy.
Phogat emphasized that the academy will serve as a platform where young athletes can train without the hindrance of inadequate facilities. She expressed her commitment to creating an environment that respects and inspires every hardworking athlete, highlighting her transition from personal achievements to supporting the broader sporting community.
Currently serving as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Julana, Phogat’s decision to invest in the future of sports underscores her dedication to giving back to the community and fostering the next generation of champions.
