Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season due to a hairline fracture in his elbow. The injury occurred during CSK’s match against the Rajasthan Royals on March 30, when Gaikwad was struck on his unprotected elbow by a short ball. Despite the injury, he continued to play in subsequent matches against Delhi and Punjab before being sidelined.
In a heartfelt video message shared on CSK’s social media, the 28-year-old expressed his disappointment: “I am really gutted to miss the rest of the IPL due to an unfortunate elbow injury. I want to thank everyone for your support so far, it truly means a lot.”
In response to Gaikwad’s injury, MS Dhoni has resumed captaincy duties for CSK. Dhoni, who led the team from 2008 to 2023, had handed over the reins to Gaikwad last season. At 43, Dhoni returns to leadership amidst a challenging season for the franchise, with CSK currently positioned ninth out of ten teams, having lost four of their first five matches.
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the development, stating, “Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the IPL with a fracture on his elbow. MS Dhoni will take over as captain for the rest of the season.”
CSK’s next match is scheduled against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
