Shami achieved significant success by dismissing openers Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra early. He later returned to dismiss key batsmen including Williamson and Tom Latham in the decisive over. Shami’s exceptional performance included taking the wickets of Mitchell, Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson in the final overs, completing his best performance in ODIs.
As Mitchell and Williamson took New Zealand past 200, Shami intervened and took two wickets in three balls in the 33rd over. The packed Wankhede Stadium echoed with patriotic slogans as the Indian bowlers were aiming to take more wickets. Mitchell’s resistance ended in the 46th over, with Ravindra Jadeja catching him off Shami’s bowling at the score of 134, sealing India’s memorable victory.
Earlier in the match, Kohli set a new record for most centuries in ODIs and Iyer contributed a powerful century, helping India reach a huge total. Kohli’s 50th century and Iyer’s aggressive 105 runs with the help of eight sixes showcased India’s batting ability. Despite a fast start from Rohit Sharma, a half-century from Shubman Gill and a solid partnership between Kohli and Iyer, Kohli’s dismissal after scoring 117 is a sign of a change in momentum. Iyer and KL Rahul continued to take the total forward and India ended their innings at 397/4.
