New Delhi, January 21 (UITV)- IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) announced the appointment of Rishabh Pant as the new captain for IPL 2025. The team’s principal owner Sanjiv Goenka gave this information, making it clear that Pant has been entrusted with the leadership of the team for the upcoming IPL season. Pant became the most expensive player in the IPL mega auction held in Jeddah last year when LSG bought him for Rs 27 crore. Now, he will be the fourth captain of LSG during his career in the IPL, before whom KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran and Krunal Pandya played this role.
The last two seasons i.e. 2022 and 2023 were quite good for LSG, as the team made it to the playoffs. However, in 2024, LSG suffered a major setback and failed to make it to the playoffs for the first time. Due to poor net run rate, they finished seventh in the points table. Now the team’s hopes are that under the leadership of Rishabh Pant, LSG will perform better in the upcoming season and return to the playoffs.
This will be the second IPL team for Pant, which he will captain. Earlier, Pant captained the Delhi Capitals (DC), where he was the captain of the team from 2021 to 2024. However, in the 2023 season, Pant was seriously injured in a car accident and due to this he could not participate in the IPL season. After this accident in December 2022, Pant was released by DC before the retention deadline of IPL 2025, after which he was associated with LSG.
Rishabh Pant will work with head coach Justin Langer at IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants, whom he met during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia. Working with Justin Langer will be a new experience for Pant and it can also be a great opportunity for the LSG batsmen. Apart from this, former India left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan will also be in the role of mentor in the team, who will help in strengthening the bowling department of the team.
Pant will be accompanied by key players like Nicholas Pooran, David Miller, Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram in the batting department of LSG. Apart from this, young players like Ayush Badoni, Aryan Juyal, Abdul Samad and Himmat Singh have also got a place in the team. This team looks strong in every department and Pant will get a chance to captain this star-studded team.
In the bowling department, Pant will have experienced bowlers like Indian fast bowlers Akash Deep and Avesh Khan. Apart from this, already retained players Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav and Mohsin Khan will also be part of the team. With this strong bowling attack, Pant will hope that his team will play even stronger in the upcoming season.
The ICC Champions Trophy is an important tournament for Rishabh Pant ahead of the IPL 2025 season. The tournament will start on February 20 and India will face England. Pant has also got a place in the Indian team playing the home ODI series against England, which is a big achievement for him. Pant’s performance in this series and the Champions Trophy will make his preparations for the upcoming IPL season even more important.
Rishabh Pant’s IPL career has been great so far and this new chapter of his with Lucknow Super Giants can be even more exciting. Under Pant’s leadership, the team hopes to improve its weaknesses and reach new heights in the next season.
