Cricket legend Shikhar Dhawan has announced his retirement from domestic and international cricket. Today, on Saturday, former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan released a video announcing his retirement from cricket on his social media account X. In this video, Dhawan thanked his fans for their love and support throughout his career.
Shikhar Dhawan has officially announced his retirement from domestic cricket after a brilliant career of 13 years with the Indian team. He has shared this important decision with his fans through social media. In the caption of his retirement video, Dhawan wrote, ‘I am ending this chapter of my cricketing journey, taking countless memories and gratitude with me.’
In a video released on X, Shikhar Dhawan announced that I had a dream to play for India, which I achieved. I am grateful to all those who have contributed to my journey. I would first like to thank my family and childhood coaches late Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma for their contribution. I learned all aspects of the game under the guidance of coaches late Tarak Sinha and Madan Sharma.
He further said that, I would also like to thank my team, with whom I have played cricket for years. Let us tell you that, Dhawan made his international debut on October 20, 2010 in Dr. Visakhapatnam. YS Rajasekhara Reddy did in the ODI match against Australia at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium. He played just two balls in that match and was dismissed for a wicket by Clint McKay. His start was poor, but he was given a chance and played four more ODIs in 2011, after which he was dropped from the team.
In England and Wales in 2013, the left-handed batsman made a strong comeback during the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy, scoring 363 runs in just five matches at an average of 90.75, a performance that contributed significantly to India’s tournament victory. Shikhar Dhawan batted brilliantly in the Champions Trophy, for which he was awarded the player of the tournament. He then scored two centuries against South Africa and West Indies. He further managed to establish his dominance on the international stage by scoring a half-century against Sri Lanka.
In 2013 and 2017, Dhawan has scored the most runs in two consecutive Champions Trophies. He was also awarded the prestigious ‘Golden Bat’ for this. Shikhar Dhawan was the highest run-scorer for India in the 2015 ODI World Cup.
Dhawan scored 2315 runs at an average of 40.61 in 34 Tests, scoring seven centuries and five fifties. He scored 187 on Test debut, which is his highest score in a Test match.
In his ODI career, Dhawan has scored 6793 runs at an average of 44.11 in 167 ODI matches, scoring 17 centuries and 39 fifties, while he has played 68 T20 matches, scoring 1759 runs at a strike rate of 126.36 with eleven fifties.
Dhawan last played for India in the ODI series against Bangladesh in December 2022, but was replaced by Shubman Gill in the team. The Delhi-born cricketer represented India in the Test match against Bangladesh. He has contributed immensely to Indian cricket, for which he will be fondly remembered by fans all over the world.
