The All India Football Federation expresses deep sorrow at the passing of former Indian defender Prabir Majumdar, who breathed his last in Kolkata on Thursday, December 28, 2023, following a brief illness. He was 77 years old, leaving behind his wife and a son.
Known for his stylish play as a wing-back during the 1960s and 1970s, Majumdar was a notable part of the Indian team during the 1974 Asian Games. In his domestic football career, he proudly represented East Bengal, Eastern Railways, and Bengal in the Santosh Trophy. As a crucial member of the triumphant East Bengal squad in the 1970s, Majumdar contributed to numerous championship victories, including the Calcutta Football League, IFA Shield, Durand Cup, Rovers Cup, DCM Trophy, Bordoloi Trophy, among others.
In remembrance of Majumdar, AIFF President Mr. Kalyan Chaubey expressed his condolences, stating, “Prabir-da was one of the most reliable and respected defenders of his era, shining brightly among a constellation of star players. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family in this time of grief.”
AIFF Acting Secretary General Mr. M. Satyanarayan reflected on Majumdar’s legacy, saying, “Prabir Majumdar was a standout footballer in his prime and continued to be an inspiration for players in subsequent generations. His demise leaves a significant void in Indian football.”
