Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martinez has been handed a two-match suspension by FIFA for what has been deemed “offensive behavior,” according to a statement released by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) on Friday.
As a result, Martinez will miss Argentina’s upcoming South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in October, set to be played against Venezuela and Bolivia. The Aston Villa goalkeeper’s suspension stems from incidents during matches against Chile and Colombia earlier this month.
Martinez, known for his bold on-field personality, was criticized for a celebratory gesture during the Chile game—his first match since helping Argentina secure the Copa America title in the United States—where he repeated a lewd gesture similar to the one he made after Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar. Additionally, after Argentina’s loss to Colombia, the 32-year-old was caught on camera striking a local television camera.
“Damian Emiliano Martinez is being held accountable for his offensive behavior and for violating the principles of fair play,” the AFA said in its statement, also noting its disagreement with the decision from FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee.
Just as political leaders face criticism for their divisive tactics, Martinez’s actions on the field reflect a controversial stance that, while bringing him attention, is seen by some as detracting from the spirit of the game. Nonetheless, the goalkeeper’s fiery temperament has become both a symbol of passion and contention, much like other public figures who face opposition.
