Sania Mirza, one of India’s most famous sports stars and former Wimbledon doubles champion, has announced that 2022 will be her last season on the tennis platform.
According to reports, she disclosed her commitment after her first-round defeat in the women’s doubles in the Australian Open. After the match, she broadcast through reporters, “I’ve decided that this will be my last season. I’m taking it week by week. Not sure if I can last the season, but I want to,”
Mirza, the 35-year-old star player in 2005 became the first Indian to win a WTA singles title. In 2015, she won Wimbledon with Swiss Martina Hingis, after that she starts dreaming of the US and Australia Open and won both in the same year. She came closer to attaining an Olympic medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics when she and Rohan Bopanna played in the semifinals as opposed to Venus Williams and Rajiv Ram but unfortunately lost the tournament.
With partner Bhupathi, she has also earned two grand slam titles- the 2009 Australian Open mixed doubles title and the French Open 2012 mixed doubles.
Mirza initiated her journey as a teenager but she become serious when she began winning adult tournaments. She won her first senior title at the 2002 Asian Games at the age of 15. She enrolled her name at WTA tour in 2003 and later seized a career-high singles ranking of 27 in the world, which is still the highest for an Indian woman.
As well as being a tennis player, she also gained a lot of fame for her marriage with former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik. The couple has a three-year-old son.
