Hangzhou, October 3: After their stellar performance on Sunday, Indian athletes had a relatively quiet day at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Stadium on Monday and won three silver medals and one bronze.
The day started with Vithya Ramraj making a significant mark in the morning. She equaled the 40-year-old national record of the renowned PT Usha by clocking a remarkable time of 55.42 seconds in the women’s 400m hurdles, which is also her personal best. This achievement earned him a place in the finals. PT Usha had set a national record by narrowly missing out on a bronze medal during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
In the evening events, Parul Choudhary and Preeti Lamba won silver and bronze respectively in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Parul Choudhary finished second with a timing of 9:27.63, while Preeti Lamba won the bronze medal with a personal best timing of 9:43.32. Both of them finished behind defending world champion and Jakarta Asian Games gold medalist Winfried Mutile Yawi, originally from Kenya but now representing Bahrain. Yawi set a new Asian Games record with her excellent time of 9:18.23, breaking her compatriot Ruth Zabel’s previous record of 9:31.36.
Se Ansi also put in an impressive performance, achieving a personal best distance of 6.63 meters in the women’s long jump. She won the silver medal, while China’s Shiqi Xiong won the gold medal after clearing her personal best of 6.73 meters. Ansi expressed her satisfaction, saying, “I got a very good rhythm and I was happy with my effort right from the second attempt when I scored 6.49. I am very happy considering that I faced some challenging times It was, and it was great.” It felt good to give my personal best and win my first medal at the Asian Games.” Unfortunately, she failed on her sixth and final jump, preventing her from improving her performance further.
