Two-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the last 16 of the French Open for the third year in a row. He defeated American Sebastian Korda in straight sets 6–4, 7–6 (7–5), 6–3 to reach the last 16 of the French Open. The 27th-seeded American is the reigning Wimbledon champion, playing in the night session for the first time this year at Roland Garros.
Carlos Alcaraz will face the winner of the match between American 15th seed Ben Shelton and Canadian 21st seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the next round.
According to news agency Xinhua, when Auger-Aliassime was leading 5-4 in the first set, it started to rain, which interrupted the match.
In Paris last year, the 21-year-old Alcaraz lost to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.
Alcaraz said after the bout that the match was a really good match. I feel like I did better than last match. It was kind of like what I wanted. I played the same match I play and managed to win.
The biggest upset of the day came from unseeded Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi defeating sixth seed Andriy Rublev. Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi advances to the Round of 16 at Roland Garros for the first time.
Rublev has been defeated by the 23-year-old for the second time in a row in Paris. He won in three impressive sets 7-6 (6), 6-2, 6-4.
Matteo Arnaldi will have to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to book a place in the quarter-finals. Matteo Arnaldi said of his victory that it was incredible. I won in three consecutive sets with a good performance. So I feel like I played the best tennis of my life today. I didn’t expect that. It’s easy to do that in two sets in a normal tournament, but playing three sets in a slam at this level is no easy feat.
