Sep 19 – Rafael Nadal is aware that he would likely end up with less Grand Slam singles championships than his opponent Novak Djokovic — and he claims Djokovic would be “frustrated” if he had not established the record.
“I’m not frustrated for a simple reason,” Nadal told Movistar. “I believe that, within my means, I have done everything possible to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible for me.
“Novak could be frustrated because he lives everything more intensely and that’s why he’s the best.”
Djokovic, 36, cemented his GOAT reputation last week by capturing a record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title at the US Open. He became the oldest man to win the title, tying Margaret Court for the most in either men’s or women’s tennis.
Nadal, 37, is still on track for a comeback in 2024 after undergoing hip surgery earlier this year. Roger Federer, who retired last year, ranks third in men’s Slam titles with 20.
On social media, some Djokovic fans chastised Nadal for not applauding Djokovic on his 24th major title and for his “frustration” remark.
The Spaniard appeared to express sorrow about missing so many Slams due to health difficulties, whereas Djokovic has maintained his fitness, allowing him to compete in — and win — more majors. The Serb has reached the finals of 36 of the 72 Grand Slams he has competed in.
“I have been one of the most inactive players on the circuit for many years,” Nadal said. “I’ve missed four and a half years of Grand Slams. That’s what the sport is all about. Djokovic is also more successful because he has had a level of fitness/physique that has allowed him to play more than me.”
