A recent report by talent assessment firm Mercer Mettl highlights a significant rise in the employability of Indian graduates for roles in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). In 2024, 46% of graduates were deemed employable in AI/ML-driven positions, up from 40% in 2023.
The study, which analyzed data from over a million students across more than 2,700 campuses, also revealed that 50% of graduates possess the soft skills necessary for AI and Generative AI collaboration. Key strengths include communication skills (55.1%), critical thinking (54.6%), and leadership abilities (54.2%). However, creativity remains an area for improvement, with only 44.3% of graduates demonstrating employability in this skill.
Despite advancements in AI/ML roles, the overall employability of Indian graduates has declined, with only 42.6% considered employable in 2024, down from 46.2% in 2023. Non-technical roles have been particularly affected, with employability dropping to 43.5% from 48.3% the previous year.
Geographically, Delhi leads with 53.4% of its graduates being employable, followed by Himachal Pradesh and Punjab at 51.1% each. This trend is attributed to quality education, industry collaborations, and favorable economic conditions in these regions.
The report underscores the growing demand for AI, data analytics, and digital skills in India’s evolving job market. While technical proficiency is on the rise, there is a pressing need to enhance creativity and adaptability among graduates to meet the dynamic requirements of both technical and non-technical roles.
