On January 25, 2025, a devastating attack attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeted the Saudi Teaching Maternal Hospital in El Fasher, North Darfur, Sudan. The assault resulted in at least 68 fatalities and 19 injuries, primarily affecting patients and their companions.
The Sudanese Doctors Network condemned the incident, labeling it a “new massacre” by the RSF. They reported that the hospital’s emergency department was destroyed in the attack.
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed deep concern over the incident, urging an immediate cessation of attacks on healthcare facilities and workers in Sudan. He emphasized that the Saudi Teaching Maternal Hospital was the only functional hospital in the region, providing essential medical services.
This tragic event underscores the escalating violence in Sudan’s civil war, which began in April 2023. The conflict between the Sudanese military and the RSF has led to tens of thousands of deaths, widespread displacement, and a severe humanitarian crisis, particularly in the Darfur region.
